What I've Learned About New Literacies

nald.ca

I am constantly learning. I absolutely LOVE learning. When I was a child I remember being afraid of what I didn't know. Fortunately, I have been able to embrace the unknown, gain confidence, and learn! I am finding that new literacies are great opportunities for me to learn more.

From the website Toward a Theory of New Literacies Emerging From the Internet and Other Information and Communication Technologies  http://www.readingonline.org/newliteracies/leu/ the authors address the importance of changing instruction based on the needs of today's child. "In an information age, we believe it becomes essential to prepare students for these new literacies because they are central to the use of information and the acquisition of knowledge. Traditional definitions of literacy and literacy instruction will be insufficient if we seek to provide students with the futures they deserve." (Donald J. Leu, Jr., Charles K. Kinzer, Julie L. Coiro, Dana W. Cammack)

When thinking about New Literacies, I realize how much learning, growing, and changing needs to take place. I know where I need to be, I know where I am now, what can I do to bridge the gap?

This YouTube video addresses the need for teachers to change. Is doing all the heavy lifting truly helping our students? We need to get students involved!
